What I learned from Lefteris is that Virtuemart should be set to English only AND remove the mark that Virtuemart uses English as fall back language.
How did you set up your categories in K2?
It worked for me on Lefteris' advise to make a root folder and language folder.
Make sure the root folder stays empty. In Virtuemart also.
If your shop is empty now that is handy.
Have you enabled the Multi language status tool?
Did you follow the tutorial of Hagen Graf?
The first step is to make sure that Joomla 2.5 is setup correctly as a Multi language environment.

What software does your server run on?
The php version is crucial.
It should be at least 5.3.15.
